Mobile applications keep growing like crazy. According to the latest research from In-Stat, this market is expected to reach nearly 48 billion downloads in 2015, driven by the increased smartphone penetration.
Touchscreen devices will continue to dominate the landscape with nearly 90% of smartphones shipped in 2011, and will increase to nearly 100% in the next several years. Furthermore, smartphones are expected to increase from 23% of total phone shipments in 2010 to 45% in 2015.
When it comes to number of apps per platform, Apple's App Store is leading the way with 350,000 apps while Android Market reached 80,000 apps (note: some reports say it surpassed 100,000 apps). Unsurprisingly, Apple and Android users are significantly more likely than BlackBerry users to have downloaded mobile applications.
Finally, In-Stat points out that smartphone applications are not only about 3G with almost half of survey respondents report downloading applications over Wi-Fi…
As usual, you can get additional details about In-Stat's report from their website.
