가트너 "윈도7 성공적 안착 때문"... 모바일OS는 점유율 낮아 평가에서 제외
마이크로소프트(MS)가 전 세계 운영체제 시장(클라이언트 및 서버 포함)에서 78.6%를 점유하며 압도적인 우위를 차지하고 있다는 조사 결과가 나왔다. 이는 지난해 같은기간보다 8.8%p 늘어난 것이다.
글로벌 시장조사기관 가트너(Gartner)는 27일 보도자료를 통해 리눅스 서버와 맥 데스크톱의 최근 선전에도 불구하고 전체 운영체제 시장에서 MS가 78.6%를 차지하며 완승을 거두고 있다고 밝혔다. 가트너의 이번 조사에는 MS, IBM, HP, 오라클, 레드햇, 애플 등 운영체제 소프트웨어를 제작하거나 사업적으로 운영하고 있는 기업을 모두 조사 대상으로 삼았다.
운영체제 시장은 크게 데스크톱 마켓과 서버 마켓으로 나뉜다. 윈도는 데스크톱 시장과 서버 시장에서 모두 239억달러를 벌어 들였다. 이는 2009년 같은 기간의 219억 달러(77.9%)보다 다소 많은 수치다.
이어 유닉스 및 메인프레임 운영체제를 제작하는 IBM은 2010년 23억 달러(7.5%)를 벌어 들이며, 인기 리눅스 제작사인 레드햇(2%)과 애플 맥OSX(1.7%) 따돌렸다. 다만 가트너는 리눅스와 맥OSX의 점유율이 각각 18.0%p와 15.8%p 상승하며 가장 빨리 성장하는 운영체제라고 평가했다.
경쟁자들의 치열한 도전에도 불구하고 MS의 이러한 선전은 지금까지 무려 3억5000만 카피가 팔린 윈도7의 성공 때문이다. 윈도는 데스크톱 시장에서 177억 달러를 벌어 들이며 96.6% 점유율을 기록했다. 같은 기간 맥OSX는 2.8%, 리눅스는 0.6%에 불과했다.
서버 부문에서는 윈도가 62억 달러를 벌어들이며 점유율 51%를 기록했다. 그 뒤에 HP 유닉스가 8.6%, IBM 유닉스가 8.5%, 리눅스 8.4%, IBM 메인프레임 7.8% 순이었다. 그러나 매출 기준이 아니라 서버 사용 점유율로 따지면 순위는 달라진다. W3테크(W3Techs) 자료에 따르면, 전 세계 상위 100만개 웹사이트 중에 리눅스를 웹서버로 사용하는 곳은 64.1%이며, 윈도는 35.9%, 맥OSX는 0%(거의 점유율 없음)다. 매출은 비록 적지만, 인터넷 트래픽의 상당수를 리눅스 서버가 유지하고 있는 셈이다.
한편, 전 세계 전체 운영체제 시장 규모는 2010년 304억 달러로, 2009년 같은 기간보다 7.8% 상승했다. 또한 이번 조사에서는 가트너는 모바일 운영체제 시장 자료는 포함하지 않았다. 안드로이드나 애플 iOS 등 운영체제는 여전히 전체 OS 시장에서 매우 작은 수준이기 때문이다. 최근 업계 조사 자료에 따르면 전체 소비자용 운영체제 시장에서 애플의 모바일 운영체제 점유율은 2009년 0.81%에서 2010년 1.87%로 상승했으며, 윈도는 91.3%에서 89.6%로 줄어 들었다.

어태치메이트, 노벨 인수 완료…유닉스 특허는?

[지디넷코리아] 미국 IT관리 보안솔루션 업체 어태치메이트그룹이 노벨 인수 절차를 마쳤다고 29일 밝혔다.
지난해 11월 시작된 인수 과정은 어태치메이트그룹이 노벨을 22억달러에 인수하고 협상에 참여한 컨소시엄 CPTN홀딩스가 882개 특허를 4억5천만달러에 넘겨받는 조건으로 진행됐다. CPTN홀딩스 멤버는 이를 주도하는 마이크로소프트(MS)와 오라클, EMC, 애플 등이다.
지난주 미국 법무부는 노벨 특허를 CPTN홀딩스에 넘겨주는 거래를 승인했다. 여기에는 유닉스 관련 저작권이 포함돼 있다. MS는 컨소시엄이 사들인 특허를 어태치메이트에 되팔거나 이를 라이선스하는 것에 동의했다. EMC는 가상화 소프트웨어(SW)에 관련된 33개 특허를 사들이지 않겠다고 밝혔다. 애플과 오라클은 특허에 관한 계획을 언급하지 않았다.
영국 IT미디어 더레지스터 보도에 따르면 모든 특허는 오픈소스의 일종인 GPLv2 라이선스로 공개될 것이다. CPTN홀딩스나 그 회원사들은 노벨이나 어태치메이트가 특허를 변경하도록 유도하는 행위를 취하거나 영향력을 행사하는 입장을 표명할 수 없게 돼있다.
당시 노벨은 합병 이후에도 유닉스 관련 지적재산권을 직접 관리할 뜻을 밝혔다. 법률전문가들은 거래 복잡성을 감안하면 노벨 지재권 목록을 확인하는 작업에 몇개월이 걸릴 것이라고 지적한 바 있다.
어태치메이트그룹에 편입되는 노벨은 향후 '노벨'과 '수세' 브랜드로 나뉜다. 그룹 계열사로서 별도 사업단위를 운영하게 된다. 이들은 기존 계열사 '어태치메이트', '넷IQ'에 합류한다는 얘기다.
어태치메이트그룹은 노벨을 영입함으로써 IT운영관리, 오픈소스, 엔드유저컴퓨팅, 협업, IT자산 현대화, 보안, 인증, 컴플라이언스, 가상화, 클라우드컴퓨팅을 아우르는 솔루션을 제공하게 됐다고 밝혔다.

애플로부터 디자인을 받아 이를 생산해 주는 세계최대 주문자상표부착생산(OEM)업체인 폭스콘 중국공장 직원3명이 액세서리회사에 디자인을 유출시켜 왔던 때문이었다.
디지타임스는 29일 중국어신문 Sz뉴스(sznews.com)를 인용, 3명의 폭스콘직원이 선전경찰에 영업기밀 유출혐의로 체포·기소됐다고 보도했다. 보도에 따르면 이들은 지난 해 12월26일 아이패드2의 영업비밀인 규격을 유출해 체포됐고 지난 달 23일 기소됐다.
유출된 정보는 수많은 아이패드2 업체들에게 아이패드2 공식 발표에 앞서 액세서리 설계를 할 수 있도록 시간을 벌어 줄 수 있었던 것으로 드러났다.
이들이 액세서리업체에 공한 디자인 가운데 일부는 애플이 3월 2일 최종 발표한 디자인과 일치하지 않았지만 카메라,둥근 배면, 재배치된 스피커,마이크 및 얇아진 주변부 등을 그대로 맞췄다.
대만 혼하이정밀그룹의 게열사인 폭스콘은 HP,델,MS,소니,삼성은 물론 애플에게 디자인을 받아 아이폰,아이패드,맥북을 제조해 공급해 왔다.
폭스콘은 중국에 100만명 이상의 직원을 고용하고 있으며 자사의 제조활동을 확대하기 위해 남미 브라질에 120억달러를 투자해 공장을 세울 계획을 밝힌 바 있다.

Okay, so if you had to guess a name for an Apple service that exists in the cloud it's pretty safe to say you'd pick "iCloud," right? Good, now that we're past the obvious, there are some slightly more compelling indicators out there that this may indeed be what Apple is going to call its (presumably) soon-to-launch music streaming service. We received anonymous tips about this name in the past, and now Om Malik is reporting some interesting history, that the domain iCloud.com is owned by a company called Xcerion, which recently re-branded its cloud-based storage service from iCloud to CloudMe. TechCrunch reached out to the company and got a beautifully-worded non-denial talking about how the new name better embraces the company's cross-platform approach. That it does, but the timing is interesting. Obviously nothing is confirmed, but with Warner and at least one other of the big four record labels signed on, we'd guess the real name for this service should be drifting into view any time now.

You may have written off MeeGo handsets after Nokia all but abandoned the OS -- LG hasn't. While the company doesn't have any "definitive plans" to release a MeeGo smartphone commercially yet, LG is willing to show off some ports of MeeGo on multiple prototypes, including tablets and smartphones, at next month's MeeGo conference in San Francisco. With any luck, LG will use the spotlight to announce its intentions, proper like, and make a MeeGo handset running Intel silicon a retail reality in 2011.

The Nexus S is due to receive an over-the-air update to Android 2.3.4 over the coming weeks, but Google earned a +1 from eager fans and devs hoping to get the extra Google Talk functionality sooner. Instead of hopelessly checking for updates until the time is right, the Powers That Be are now offering the upgrade as a manual download to anyone who is already running 2.3.3 on the i9020T (the AWS-equipped model). We urge you to proceed with caution here and double-check that your phone is compatible, since those are the two requirements for the download to install properly. We've happily bumped one of our devices up to 2.3.4 this way without any sweat or tears, so we hope it will be a smooth experience for others as well. [전자신문]삼성전자 1분기 매출은 늘고, 이익은 줄고
삼성전자가 1분기에 연결기준으로 매출 약 37조원, 영업이익 2조9000억∼3조원을 달성할 전망이다. 삼성전자는 29일 오전 이 같은 내용을 골자로 한 2011년 1분기 실적을 발표한다. 매출은 작년 동기 대비 6.8% 증가했고, 영업이익은 작년 동기 대비 34.2% 감소한 것이다. 1분기 영업이익은 미국발 금융위기 여파로 세계 경기가 악화됐던 2009년 2분기 2조5700억원 이후 가장 저조한 수치다.
1분기 삼성전자 영업이익이 감소한 것은 TV 판매가격 하락, 갤럭시탭 등 모바일 기기 판매부진 및 LCD 패널 시황악화가 주요 원인으로 작용했다.
특히 TV는 글로벌 주요 경쟁사들이 출혈가격 경쟁을 벌이면서 대당판매단가가 하락한 것으로 분석된다. TV와 생활가전을 담당하는 영상디스플레이사업부는 700억∼1000억원대의 영업이익 시현이 예상된다. 디스플레이를 담당하는 LCD사업부는 1000억원대 영업손실을 내면서 적자를 벗어나지 못했다. LCD패널 가격은 지난해 2월 이후 14개월째 하락세를 기록 중이다. 반도체는 1조8000억원, 휴대폰은 1조2000억∼1조3000억원의 영업이익을 기록할 전망이다. 1분기 휴대폰 판매량은 당초 예상보다 줄어든 약 7000만대로 이 가운데 스마트폰은 1300만여대로 추정된다.
하지만 2분기에 대한 전망은 밝다.
전문가들은 반도체 가격의 추가 상승과 스마트폰 판매가 늘면서 삼성전자 영업이익이 3조8000억∼4조원까지 상승할 것으로 내다봤다. 다만 일본 대지진에 따른 핵심 부품소재의 수급이 주요 변수가 될 것으로 전망했다.
2분기는 반도체 시황이 개선되면서 반도체 부문에서 상당한 실적개선이 기대된다. 이와 함께 LED TV, 스마트TV와 스마트폰 등 신제품도 미국 및 유럽 등 선진시장에 본격적으로 출시되면서 수익성을 끌어올릴 전망이다.
전문가들은 메모리반도체 가격이 상승하면서 반도체사업부 수익성이 크게 개선될 것으로 예상했다. 이선태 메리츠증권 연구위원은 "갤럭시S2, 갤럭시탭2 등 전략 상품들이 시장에서 어떤 반응을 받는지 지켜봐야 할 것"이라면서 "메모리 경기는 상당히 좋은 편"이라고 말했다.

Staring at spreadsheets crushed down to unreadable sizes on a 4-inch phone screen is far from pleasurable but, clearly there is a demand. In fact, we've been clamoring for a proper Google Docs app for ages, even though sometimes we're not entirely sure why. It was only a matter of time before Google finally got around to appeasing us mobile workaholics and put an official app in the Android Market. Well, our masochistic prayers were answered -- the Mighty Goog unleashed the new, native Google Docs for Android app and we rushed on over to the Market, clicked the install button, and gave it a whirl.

Let's get this out of the way first: there are no offline editing capabilities. The actual editor is just the mobile web app embedded in a neat, little, native Android package. If you try to open an document without an internet connection you'll just get an cutesy error message. If you do have a connection (and exceedingly accurate fingers) you can open and edit your text documents and spreadsheets, but presentations are strictly read-only.
Google has provided more ways to filter and browse your docs than you could possibly need. You can pull them all up in a single list, narrow it down by collection (which once upon a time Google called "tags"), pull up your starred files, view only specific document types... the list goes on and on. And if all that scrolling and tapping doesn't catch your fancy there is an impressively fast search-as-you-type function.
We tested the app on a Xoom as well as a Droid X and, while we're happy to report it runs, it's certainly not optimized for Honeycomb. Launching the app presents you with the same single pane interface you get on the phone blown-up to tablet proportions. Instead of a list of collections on the left and files on the right you just end up with vast swaths of empty space. This is doubly frustrating when you attempt to edit a document. The tablet keyboard may be easier to type on than a phone (and easier still is a Bluetooth one) but, it makes little difference when selecting a line of text to edit or manipulating spreadsheet filters requires the fingers of a five-year-old.
The two big advantages of the native app are the homescreen widget and the ability to create a document from a photo. The widget is simple enough and lets you open the app, view your starred docs, or create new ones. One of the ways you can create a new document is by pointing your smartphone's camera at a bit of text and snapping a pic. The image is then uploaded to Google, where the Mountain View crew works some of its OCR magic that it's been perfecting under the guise of Google Goggles. The results are decidedly mixed. If you don't have steady hands don't expect much -- even slightly out of focus photos produce a doc with no text. If you can manage to score a perfectly clear image though, Docs does an admirable job of deciphering them.
If you find yourself constantly visiting the mobile Google Docs just to look up information in previously created documents and spreadsheets there is no reason not to install this app -- it's more than serviceable for reading docs. The lack of offline editing is extremely disappointing and unless you've got a tripod for your phone the OCR will prove to be rather unreliable. Still, the app is free, so what do you have to lose?

Let's get this out of the way first: there are no offline editing capabilities. The actual editor is just the mobile web app embedded in a neat, little, native Android package. If you try to open an document without an internet connection you'll just get an cutesy error message. If you do have a connection (and exceedingly accurate fingers) you can open and edit your text documents and spreadsheets, but presentations are strictly read-only.
Google has provided more ways to filter and browse your docs than you could possibly need. You can pull them all up in a single list, narrow it down by collection (which once upon a time Google called "tags"), pull up your starred files, view only specific document types... the list goes on and on. And if all that scrolling and tapping doesn't catch your fancy there is an impressively fast search-as-you-type function.
We tested the app on a Xoom as well as a Droid X and, while we're happy to report it runs, it's certainly not optimized for Honeycomb. Launching the app presents you with the same single pane interface you get on the phone blown-up to tablet proportions. Instead of a list of collections on the left and files on the right you just end up with vast swaths of empty space. This is doubly frustrating when you attempt to edit a document. The tablet keyboard may be easier to type on than a phone (and easier still is a Bluetooth one) but, it makes little difference when selecting a line of text to edit or manipulating spreadsheet filters requires the fingers of a five-year-old.
The two big advantages of the native app are the homescreen widget and the ability to create a document from a photo. The widget is simple enough and lets you open the app, view your starred docs, or create new ones. One of the ways you can create a new document is by pointing your smartphone's camera at a bit of text and snapping a pic. The image is then uploaded to Google, where the Mountain View crew works some of its OCR magic that it's been perfecting under the guise of Google Goggles. The results are decidedly mixed. If you don't have steady hands don't expect much -- even slightly out of focus photos produce a doc with no text. If you can manage to score a perfectly clear image though, Docs does an admirable job of deciphering them.
If you find yourself constantly visiting the mobile Google Docs just to look up information in previously created documents and spreadsheets there is no reason not to install this app -- it's more than serviceable for reading docs. Apple has a tablet. So does RIM. HP Palm too, soon enough. And Android tablets, particularly those running Honeycomb... they're everywhere -- hell, even Sony has a few on the way. That leaves Nokia as the glaring anomaly conspicuously absent from the tablet wars. Understandable, we guess, given the company's urgent need to transition its smartphone strategy to Windows Phone. That doesn't mean the company is standing still though. According to an interview with YLE television in Finland, Nokia CEO Stephen Elop is taking a very calculated approach to tablets, saying, "We could take advantage of Microsoft technology and software, and build a Windows-oriented tablet, or we could do things with some of the other software assets that we have. Our team right now is assessing what's the right tablet strategy for Nokia." In other words, Nokia is investigating tablets running Windows 7 (doubtful), MeeGo (doubtful), and Windows Next, aka that tablet-friendly Windows 8 OS (likely). Makes sense to us and echoes what we've heard about Sony's relatively delayed entry into consumer tablets. Why should Nokia build another me-too tablet when it can tap into the combined Microsoft / Nokia ecosystem and make a grab at some real market share and profit? And, my challenge to the team is I don't wanna be the 201st tablet on the market that you can't tell from all of the others. 지난 27일 한국마이크로소프트(MS) 개발자플랫폼사업부(DPE) 서진호 부장은 "다음달 24일 망고 버전에 대응하는 새 윈도폰 개발자 도구(WPDT)가 베타 버전으로 공개될 것"이라며 "여기에는 차기 윈도폰 운영체제(OS) 신기능을 위한 툴과 SDK가 포함된다"고 밝혔다.
망고는 한국어를 제대로 지원하는 첫번째 윈도폰으로 알려져 국내서도 사용자들 관심을 모은다.
■윈도폰 '망고' 무엇이 달라지나
MS가 예고한 바에 따르면 망고는 라이브타일, 푸시알림 등을 연결해 사용자의 실시간 상호작용을 강화하는 '라이브 에이전트' 기술을 새로 지원한다. 애플리케이션 멀티태스킹, 내장된 트위터, 모바일용 인터넷 익스플로러(IE) 9, 휴대폰용 SQL 데이터베이스(DB)도 도입된다.
모바일용 IE9는 일반PC용과 100% 같은 모양으로 웹사이트를 열어볼 수 있도록 개발되고 있다. MS는 이를 위해 HTML5 표준과 CSS3 등을 지원하고 그래픽 처리 장치(GPU) 기반 가속을 구현할 계획이다.
또 MS와 협력해 단말기 생산과 서비스 제휴를 선언한 노키아의 최초 윈도폰 단말기에도 망고 버전이 탑재될 예정이다. 노키아는 최근 자사 지도서비스 '오비맵'을 윈도폰 단말기에 넣을 계획도 밝혔다. 이는 구글이 안드로이드에 탑재한 '구글맵'처럼 위치기반 서비스(LBS)와 지도정보 제공에 활용된다.
그런데 망고용 윈도폰 개발툴이 최종 버전(RTM)으로 나올 시기는 확정되지 않았다. 서 부장은 "SDK가 베타 버전일 때는 윈도폰OS 역시 베타 버전이란 얘기"라며 "개발툴은 망고 RTM과 함께 업데이트될 것"이라고 덧붙였다.

이와 함께 노키아가 생산하는 윈도폰은 연내 등장할 수 있다는 루머가 돌고 있다. 당초 현재 개발에 들어간 '노키아 윈도폰'은 내년부터 시판될 예정이었다.
지난 21일 모바일기기 소식을 다루는 인포싱크는 카이 오이스타모 노키아 수석부사장(EVP) 발언을 인용, 노키아가 윈도폰7.5 초기버전을 탑재한 스마트폰을 이미 테스트중이며 이를 연내 출시할 계획이라고 보도했다.
보도에 따르면 오이스타모 EVP는 앤디 리스 MS 윈도폰 총괄 담당과 공동 성명을 통해 "직원 수백명이 내년 출시할 제품 로드맵에 맞춰 일하고 있다"면서도 "올해 첫 출시를 위한 압박을 가하는 중"이라고 밝혔다.
지난달 스티븐 엘롭 노키아 최고경영자(CEO)는 제품 출시까지 걸리는 기간이 적잖아 시장 선점에 대한 부담을 느낀다고 고백한 바 있다. 다른 제조사들의 윈도폰 단말기는 이미 연내 출시를 예고한 상태였기 때문이다.
또 노키아는 소프트웨어(SW)를 외부 협력업체에 맡기고 하드웨어 제조에 집중할 방침이다.
회사는 27일(현지시간) 임직원 7천여명을 줄이고 이가운데 3천여명인 심비안SW 관련 조직을 컨설팅업체 액센추어에 넘긴다고 밝혔다. 액센추어는 향후 윈도폰 기반 SW서비스도 맡게 된다.

앞서 미국 지디넷 등 외신들은 지난 25일 마이크로소프트(MS)가 윈도폰7으로 알려진 자사 스마트폰 운영체제(OS) 이름을 숫자가 빠진 '윈도폰'으로 바꾸고, 메이저 업그레이드 버전 망고를 윈도폰 7.5 버전으로 선보일 예정이라고 보도했다. 현재 정식으로 공개된 윈도폰 최신 버전은 7.1이다.
MS가 자사 휴대폰 플랫폼 이름을 바꾼 일은 처음이 아니다. 회사는 윈도폰7을 윈도폰으로 바꾸기 전에 윈도폰7시리즈(WP7S)를 윈도폰7으로 줄였던 것이다.
그리고 망고 프로젝트 결과물이 윈도폰7.5 버전일 것이란 루머는 지난해부터 있었다. 이 다음은 내년 출시를 앞둔 코드명 '아폴로', 윈도폰8.0 버전이다.

유럽통신사, 구글에 “사용료 내라”

파이낸셜타임스 등 주요 외신은 26일(현지시간) 프랑스텔레콤, 텔레포니카, 보다폰 등 유럽 이동통신사들이 구글에 상당 규모 인터넷 사용료를 물게 하는 방안을 검토하는 중이라고 보도했다.
유럽 통신업계는 구글의 유튜브 동영상서비스 등 온라인 콘텐츠가 이동통신망 데이터 트래픽의 급증을 유발해 네트워크 과부하를 초래한다며, 콘텐츠 제공자들에게 전체비용 대비 부담금을 부과해야 한다고 주장했다.
이에 대해 유럽연합(EU)은 유럽 내 통신업체들에게 네트워크망 설비투자를 늘릴 것을 요구하는 상태다.
닐리 코뢰스 EU집행위원회 부의장은 지난 2월 "역내 광대역통신망 속도를 향상시키려는 EU의 목표에 비해 유럽 통신업체들의 투자가 부족하다"며 "통신사들이 적극적으로 서버 증설 등 통신망 설비 확충에 나서야 한다"고 꼬집었다.
통신업계에서는 신규 네트워크에 투자를 할 것이지만 새로운 수익원이 필요하다고 반박했다. 그 중 하나로 네트워크 과부하를 초래하는 콘텐츠 제공자에게 부담금을 물리는 방안을 꼽았다.
외신들은 유럽 통신업계의 이 같은 움직임이 고급 정보를 유료화 시키는 등 망 중립성 논쟁을 불러일으킬 것이라고 지적했다.

[지디넷코리아] 한국HP(대표 함기호)는 'e프린트' 기능이 탑재된 HP 복합기 제품에 구글 클라우드 프린트 앱을 지원한다고 27일 밝혔다.
구글 클라우드 프린트는 프린터 드라이버 없이 모바일 기기에서 워드문서 및 웹 사이트 내용을 실시간으로 출력할 수 있도록 한 모바일 프린팅 솔루션이다.
구글 클라우드 출력을 지원하는 앱은 현재 모바일용 지메일, 모바일용 구글 독스, 크롬 OS이며 차츰 확대될 예정이다.
HP는 해당 솔루션이 PC에 저장하는 절차 없이 ▲포토스마트 ▲오피스젯 ▲레이저젯 프로에 부여되는 고유 이메일 주소를 구글 계정에 추가하면 구글 앱을 통해 모바일 출력을 할 수 있다고 설명했다.

국내중소기업 70% "클라우드 모른다"

[지디넷코리아] 최근 마이크로소프트(MS)가 진행한 설문 결과 우리나라 중소기업이 클라우드컴퓨팅을 이해하는 수준은 아태지역 8개국중 꼴찌인 것으로 나타났다. 국가별 순위에서도 우리나라는 태국에 이어 2번째로 낮은 이해도를 보였다.
마이크로소프트(MS)는 지난 2월 아태지역 8개국 IT책임자, 관리자 900여명을 설문한 조사에서 사업장 PC가 50대 미만인 국내 IT관계자 70%가 "클라우드컴퓨팅을 모른다"고 답했다고 27일 밝혔다.

[지디넷코리아] 최근 마이크로소프트(MS)가 진행한 설문 결과 우리나라 중소기업이 클라우드컴퓨팅을 이해하는 수준은 아태지역 8개국중 꼴찌인 것으로 나타났다. 국가별 순위에서도 우리나라는 태국에 이어 2번째로 낮은 이해도를 보였다.
마이크로소프트(MS)는 지난 2월 아태지역 8개국 IT책임자, 관리자 900여명을 설문한 조사에서 사업장 PC가 50대 미만인 국내 IT관계자 70%가 "클라우드컴퓨팅을 모른다"고 답했다고 27일 밝혔다.

‘독한 LG’ 마침내 휴대폰 부활 신호

휴대폰 사업부의 지난 1분기 적자가 전년 대비 1천500억원 줄어들며, 2분기 흑자전환 기대까지 만들었다.
LG전자는 휴대폰 담당 무선사업부(Mobile Communications)가 1분기 매출 2조9천91억원, 영업적자 1천5억원을 기록했다고 29일 공시했다.
휴대폰만 보면 매출이 2조8천517억원, 영업적자 1천11억원으로, 영업이익률이 전 분기 -7.7%에서 -3.5%로 4.2% 포인트 줄어든 것이 눈에 띈다.
이는 판매량이 2천450만대로 전 분기 3천60만대 대비 20% 가량 줄어들었음에도 나온 결과여서 제품 마진율이 높았음을 보여준다. 스마트폰 중심으로 진행해 온 구본준 부회장의 재활 노력이 통했다는 평가다.
고급형 스마트폰 옵티머스2X가 한국과 북미, 유럽 등에서 판매호조를 보였고, 보급형 스마트폰들도 적자폭을 줄이는 데 한몫했다.
LG전자 MC사업부는 지난해 2분기 시작된 적자가 4분기 연속 이어질 것이지만, 올해 1분기 상승세를 탈 것이라던 전문가들의 분석이 어느 정도 들어맞았다.
LG전자 내부에서는 구본준 부회장의 독한 실행력을 강조전략이 시장서 통한 만큼, 휴대폰 사업의 2분기 흑자전환도 가능하다는 분석이 나왔다.
LG전자 관계자는 "스마트폰 매출 비중 확대 및 비용 효율화 효과로 수익성이 개선됐다"며 "2분기에도 옵티머스 블랙을 비롯한 전력 스마트폰으로 상승세를 이어갈 것"이라고 말했다.
다만, 지난 2009년 1분기 2천260만대 이후 8분기 만에 기록한 분기 판매량 2천500만대 이하 기록은 숙제로 남았다.
한편, LG전자는 지난 1분기 전체 매출 13조1천599억원, 영업이익 1천308억원을 기록했다. 전년 동기 대비 각각 4%, 72.8% 감소한 결과지만, 3분기 연속 이어졌던 적저를 털어내 한숨 돌렸다.

또한 듀얼코어 폰인 옵티머스2X에 대해서는 "한국 시장에서 가장 먼저 출시한 이후 네덜런드에서 선보였다"며 "예약 판매와 같은 적극적인 반응이 유럽 전역으로 확산됐고 북미에서도 긍정적인 반응을 얻고 있다"고 덧붙였다.
올해 목표 판매량에 대해서는 정 부사장은 "이제 더 이상 판매 대수는 큰 의미가 없다고 생각한다"며 "단말 사업자의 니즈에 맞춘 맞춤 제품을 지속적으로 출시하고 적자가 나는 제품은 가능한한 줄여 이익을 극대화 할 것"이라고 말했다.

[지디넷코리아] 구글이 프라이버시 정책을 공개하며 사용자들에게 프라이버시에 대한 신뢰를 얼마나 얻느냐가 비즈니스의 핵심 관건이라고 강조했다.
구글 프라이버시 담당자인 키스 엔라이트는 27일 삼성동 코엑스에서 열린 ‘국제 개인정보보호 심포지움 2011’에 참석해 구글의 프라이버시 보호정책에 대해 설명했다. 그는 프라이버시 보호에 대해 정보 이용에 대해 '투명성과 통제'가 핵심이라고 강조했다.
현재 구글은 개인정보보호 데이터를 세가지 방법으로 수집하고 있다. ▲검색결과와 크롬 사용기록 등의 로그 데이터 ▲메일과 블로그 등의 계정 데이터 ▲구글 맵스와 같은 상품관련 데이터를 이용한다.
키스는 구글의 프라이버시 정책이 가장 적극적으로 적용되고 있는 로그 데이터에 대해 계정과 직접연결된 것이 아니기 때문에 개별사용자 정보를 활용하는 것은 아니라고 설명했다. 구글이 이 로그 데이터에 남아있는 IP주소는 9개월, 쿠키들은 18개월 동안 익명으로 저장한다고 밝혔다.
계정의 경우는 모든 것을 옵션사항으로 두고 사용자 선택에 의해 공개여부를 결정할 수 있고, 정보이용 현황도 한 눈에 파악할 수 있다.
하지만 구글은 특히 많은 정책 중 프라이버시 보호를 위한 최상의 보안인 암호화를 기본값으로 지원하고 있는 점에 대해 강조했다.
이 외에도 구글은 프라이버시 정보활용에 대해 사용자들의 이해를 돕기위해 프라이버시 센터를 운영하고 있다. 대부분 법률적 조항들로 이뤄진 개인정보보호 정책 안내가 많지만 사용자의 이해도를 높이기 위해 영상을 통해 정보를 제공하고 있다. 이런 센터운영을 통해 사용자들에게 신뢰성을 높일 수 있다고 그는 설명했다.
또한 그는 구글이 글로벌 사업을 펼쳐나가고 있어 겪는 어려움도 많다고 토로했다. "기술과 정책 그리고 법률까지 급속도로 변화하고 있어 모든 국가의 법률을 시행착오없이 한 번에 준수하는 것은 어렵다"면서 "다양한 공공정책 및 법률 분석을 통해 요구사항을 단기간에 충족시킬 수 있도록 하기 위해 노력하고 있다"고 밝혔다.
이 날 구글은 자사 프라이버시 정책이야말로 전세계적으로 비즈니스를 하는데 있어 가장 큰 핵심 도전과제가 될 것으로 전망했다.

애플인사이더는 26일(현지시간) 애플이 샤프와 아이폰6용 스크린(디스플레이) 계약을 했다고 보도해 주목을 끌고 있다고 전했다.
보도에 따르면 샤프는 자사의 LCDTV공장 중 한 곳인 카메야마1공장에서 아이폰6용 저온, 폴리실리콘 LCD스크린생산을 준비하고 있다.
이 스크린 기술은 미래의 아이패드와 아이패드의 재현을 위해 사용될 수 있는 것으로서 아이패드나 아이팟터치 단말기를 더욱 밝게 하는 것은 물론 훨씬 얇게 만들 수 있는 것으로 알려지고 있다.
애플인사이더는 "폴리실리콘 박막필름 트랜지스터(TFT)인 폴리실리콘LCD는 다결정실리콘으로 만들어진다"고 밝혔다.
이 방식을 사용하면 디스플레이드라이버를 바로 유리기판에 올릴 수 있어 TFT부분을 줄이면서 더 얇은 LCD디스플레이를 만들 수 있도록 해 준다는 것이다.

삼성 갤럭시S2 출시, 초스피드에 '깜짝'

[지디넷코리아] 삼성전자가 전략 스마트폰 갤럭시S2를 국내 출시했다. 해외 전시회서 선보인 빠른 속도와 선명한 화면 등이 1천400만대 이상 팔린 전작을 뛰어 넘었다.
삼성전자는 서울 서초사옥 다목적홀에서 미디어 행사를 열고 전략 스마트폰 갤럭시S2를 출시를 알렸다.
직접 사용해본 결과 웹서핑 및 애플리케이션 구동 속도는 '초스피드'를 표방했던 다른 스마트폰보다 훨씬 빨랐다. 성능만 따지면 독보적이다.
■1.2GHz 프로세서-진저브레드 막강
제작 단계에서 1GHz였던 듀얼코어 프로세서를 1.2GHz로 올렸고, SK텔레콤-KT 버전은 3G 중 최고 기술이라는 HSPA+를 적용해 21Mbps 속도를 낸다. LG유플러스는 리비전B 방식으로 9.3Mbps 속도지만, 와이파이 환경에 따라서 차이가 난다.
차세대 와이파이 기술인 2.4GHz/5GHz 듀얼밴드와 최대 300Mbps로 데이터를 전송하는 와이파이 다이렉스, 24Mbps 속도 블루투스 3.0+HS 등도 탑재했다.
운영체제(OS)는 구글 안드로이드 진저브래드로 멀티태스킹과 동영상-사진 로딩, 강력한 3D성능 등을 제공한다.
통신 환경에 따라 다르겠지만 기자가 확인한 결과 HD 영상의 유튜브 화면이 끊기지 않았고
없었고, 기본 애플리케이션 구동 시간은 0.5초 미만이었다.
화면은 4.3인치(800x480) 슈퍼 AMOLED 플러스이며 서브 픽셀을 대폭 늘린 화질로 전력 소모를 줄였다고 삼성전자는 설명했다.
두께는 SK텔레콤-KT 버전이 8.9mm, LG유플러스 버전은 9.4mm로 전작(9.9mm) 대비 얇아졌고, 1650mAh 대용량 배터리와 DMB 시청 기능도 눈에 띈다.
SK텔레콤-KT 버전의 경우 근거리 무선통신(NFC) 기능을 탑재해 모바일 결제가 가능한 것도 주목되는 부분이다.
신종균 삼성전자 무선사업부장(사장)은 "변화하는 고객 요구에 맞춰 최적의 제품을 만들었다"며 "갤럭시S2는 삼성전자의 디스플레이·퍼포먼스·콘텐츠 등을 새로운 차원으로 끌어 올렸다"고 강조했다.
■전작과 가격 비슷, 300만대 돌파?
갤럭시S2의 실 구매가는 전작과 비슷하다. 삼성전자가 제시한 갤럭시S2 출고가는 84만7천원이지만 이통사별 실 구매가는 차이가 적잖다. 다소 두껍고 NFC 기능이 빠진 LG유플러스 버전이 가격은 싸다.
2년 약정 월 5만5천원 요금제 기준으로 SK텔레콤은 24만5천원, KT 24만4천200원, LG유플러스 21만원을 받는다.
월 6만5천원 요금제 기준으로는 SK텔레콤 18만4천600원, KT 16만5천원, LG유플러스 10만5천600원이다.
이 같은 요금제에 대한 시장 평가도 스펙만큼 갤럭시S2 판매량에 영향을 미칠 것은 분명한 사실이다. 비슷한 가격의 전작은 국내서 280만대, 전 세계 1천400만대가 팔렸다.
삼성전자는 올해 스마트폰 판매 목표 6천만대를 제시했으며, 갤럭시S2 성적에 따라 희비가 달라질 전망이다.

SK텔레콤이 판매하는 아이패드2는 월 2GB의 기본데이터를 제공하는 ‘태블릿29’(월 기본료 2만9천원) 요금제와 월 4GB의 기본데이터를 제공하는 ‘태블릿45’(월 기본료 4만5천원) 요금제로 가입할 수 있다.
SK텔레콤에서 ‘태블릿29’ 요금제로 가입할 경우 24개월 약정 기준 16GB모델이 38만9천400원, 32GB모델이 49만1천400원이며, ‘태블릿45’로 가입할 때 아이패드2 16GB모델이 21만7천800원, 32GB모델이 31만9천800원이다.
올인원35 등 3만5천원 이상 정액 요금제를 쓰는 스마트폰 가입자라면 '태블릿 플러스 요금할인'으로 아이패드2 구입 시 추가할인 혜택을 받을 수 있다.
일례로, 올인원35/45 요금제 가입자는 ‘태블릿45’ 요금제로 가입 시 아이패드2 16GB 모델을 7만9천200원 추가 할인된 13만8천600원에 구입할 수 있으며, 올인원55 이상 요금제 가입자는 같은 조건으로 10만5천600원 추가 할인된 11만2천200원에 아이패드2를 구입할 수 있다.
KT가 출시하는 아이패드 ‘3G+와이파이’ 모델은 16GB, 32GB, 64GB로 나뉘며 출고가는 각각 69만3천600원, 79만5천600원, 90만3천600원으로 데이터평생2G요금과 데이터평생4G요금을 이용해 구매할 수 있다.

[지디넷코리아] 글로벌 스마트폰 시장에서 고전 중인 노키아가 내년 말까지 모두 7천명을 구조조정할 계획이라고 월스트리트저널·씨넷 등이 27일(현지시간) 보도했다.
노키아는 27일(현지시간) 3천명의 심비안 직원들을 컨설팅회사 액센추어로 옮기도록 하는 한편 내년말까지 4천명의 인력을 내년 말까지 단계적으로 감원하겠다고 발표했다.
노키아는 이번 발표에 따른 직원들의 충격을 완화시키려고 부심하고 있는 가운데 "구조조정 대상 직원이 올해 말까지는 일자리를 잃지 않을 것"이라고 밝혔다.
대다수 감원인력은 덴마크,핀란드,영국의 인력인 것으로 알려지고 있다.
이번 감원은 액센추어와 노키아 간에 오는 2013년말까지 10억유로(1조5천800억원)에 달하는 단말기 및 운영서비스 비용을 줄이기로 한 데 따른 조치다.
노키아는 이와 함께 스마트폰 운영체계(OS)인 심비안의 SW개발 등은 액센추어로부터 아웃소싱하기로 했다고 밝혔다. 이에따르면 액센추어는 노키아에서 개발되는 윈도 스마트폰의 OS유통 및 지원을 맡게 된다. .
마티 콜 액센추어그룹 CEO는 “우리가 초점을 두는 분야중의 하나는 우리가 전세계 휴대폰,및 칩 제조업체,이통사 들에게 엔지니어링컨설팅과 제품 개발서비스를 제공하는 모바일 SW분야”라고 말했다.
그는 이어 “노키아의 우수인력들이 대거 유입됨에 따라 우리의 고객들도 그들의 비즈니스 전략을 진보시키기 위해 급속히 모바일로 이동하게 될 것”이라고 말했다.
엔센추어는 이미 21만5천명의 직원을 가지고 있으며 윈도폰OS를 포함한 SW와 서비스를 노키아와 다른 회사에 제공하게 된다.

LG is bringing its Cinema 3D tech to computers with the new D41P and D42P families of monitors. The 1920 x 1080 displays range in size from 21.5-inches to 25-inches and feature the company's FPR (Film Pattern Retarder) coating that ditches the heavy active shutter glasses used by many other manufacturers for the lighter passive variety. Both monitors also sport a 5ms response time, an HDMI 1.4 port, and a 2D conversion feature -- perfect for whipping up Word docs in eye-popping 3D. Pricing is still up in the air, but the D41P and D42P lines are available in South Korea now and a global rollout will begin in June, with Europe next in line for some flicker-free 3D fun. In addition, a recent detailed survey conducted in five markets by Research Company TNS found that 77 percent of respondents expressed a preference for FPR type 3D monitor based on image quality, comfort and convenience of glasses. The survey involved blind testing after the product demonstration of almost 230 consumers across both Shutter Glass (SG) type and FPR type 3D monitor with respondents viewing a series of 3D video clips on each screen.
The LG Cinema 3D Monitor will be launched in Korea today and will be rolled out globally early June starting in Europe.

Nokia's already done quite a bit to cut ties with last year's big push for Symbian and Qt development, though this is perhaps the biggest step yet. The Finnish company has announced it's transferring responsibility for Symbian development to consulting and outsourcing firm Accenture, which sounds odd given the latter outfit's inexperience in delivering mobile OS updates, but the good news is that the 3,000 devs Nokia had working on Symbian will continue their jobs under the new employer. That basically means that Nokia will live up to its unhappy promise that there'll be "substantial reductions in employment" within its own ranks, while still keeping the men and women responsible for updating Symbian employed. Unfortunately, there will still be a further 4,000 job cuts in the company's global workforce, primarily in Finland, Denmark and the UK, which will "occur in phases" between the beginning and end of next year. Nokia's agreement with Accenture also involves continued collaboration on delivering mobility software and services on the Windows Phone platform. These measures are part of Nokia's target to reduce its Devices amp; Services non-IFRS operating expenses by 1 billion euros for the full year 2013 in comparison to the full year 2010, as announced last week.
Earlier today, Nokia announced plans to form a strategic collaboration with Accenture that would result in the transfer of Nokia's Symbian software activites, including about 3,000 employees to Accenture. In addition, Nokia also plans to reduce its global workforce by about 4,000 employees by the end of 2012, with the majority of reductions in Denmark, Finland and the UK. In accordance with country-by-country legal requirements, discussions with employee representatives started today.
Nokia also plans to consolidate the company's research and product development sites so that each site has a clear role and mission. Nokia expects the expansion of some sites and the contraction or closure of others.
All employees affected by the reduction plans can stay on the Nokia payroll through the end of 2011. Nokia expects personnel reductions to occur in phases until the end of 2012, linked to the roll-out of Nokia's planned product and services portfolio. During this period, Nokia intends to ramp up its capacity for the development of Nokia smartphones based on the Windows Phone platform, the company's broad range of mobile phones and its services portfolio.

We're still waiting for Microsoft to blow us away with its strategy for tablet domination but, thanks to the latest build of Windows 8 to drip through onto the internets, we have yet another indicator that the company's hopes rely on that OS. Of course we already know that it'll run on ARM processors, and now we have a look at a set of settings that have strong tablet implications. On display in the video below (and the picture above) are toggles for mobile broadband, Bluetooth, and GPS. Sure, laptops have those too, but here it's all presented with a Metro flair that, frankly, looks like a real chore to manage with a mouse. (Just look at those scrollbars!) But, with a 16:9 screen and gesture swiping, maybe it'll all come together. Meanwhile, WinRumors is reporting that there will be six separate flavors of Windows 8 and that tablets are actually quite far along, again pointing to a Q1 2012 release at the latest. Yes, we're already looking forward to next year's CES, aren't you?

China's been making its mark on the world for years, but there's still one massive piece of real estate where the country's citizens haven't hung their ubiquitous red flag: space. The China Manned Space Engineering Office hopes to change that within the next decade, however, unveiling a model of its first space station on Monday. The station's current moniker is Tiangong (Chinese for "heavenly palace") but the space agency is asking the public to suggest alternatives at kongjianzhan@vip.qq.com through July 25th. At 60 tons, the complete facility is significantly smaller than the 419-ton International Space Station, so residents should probably keep the man cave tidy in case Chinese astronauts need some room to stretch out while not connecting to the PlayStation Network. We're working on our own list of names for little Tiangong here, but feel free to share your submissions after the break.

The data collection that was recently brought to the public attention represents, according to Apple, the location of WiFi hotspots and cell towers around you, not your actual iPhone. Still, the fact iPhones have been shown to store as much as a year's worth of data is considered a bug by Apple, who plans to limit that period to a week in a future software update. The additional issue of data being collected after users turned off Location Services is also a bug, also to be fixed by Apple in that upcoming update. Left unanswered, however, are the questions of when Apple "uncovered" these bugs, as it claims, and why the fix for them is only coming now. Specialists have known about this behavior since at least September of last year. Either way, the software remedy is promised over the next few weeks, while the next major iteration of iOS should encrypt the cache file that's been the subject of all the scrutiny. 1. Why is Apple tracking the location of my iPhone?
Apple is not tracking the location of your iPhone. Apple has never done so and has no plans to ever do so.

Providing mobile users with fast and accurate location information while preserving their security and privacy has raised some very complex technical issues which are hard to communicate in a soundbite. Users are confused, partly because the creators of this new technology (including Apple) have not provided enough education about these issues to date.
3. Why is my iPhone logging my location?
The iPhone is not logging your location. Rather, it's maintaining a database of Wi-Fi hotspots and cell towers around your current location, some of which may be located more than one hundred miles away from your iPhone, to help your iPhone rapidly and accurately calculate its location when requested. Calculating a phone's location using just GPS satellite data can take up to several minutes. iPhone can reduce this time to just a few seconds by using Wi-Fi hotspot and cell tower data to quickly find GPS satellites, and even triangulate its location using just Wi-Fi hotspot and cell tower data when GPS is not available (such as indoors or in basements). These calculations are performed live on the iPhone using a crowd-sourced database of Wi-Fi hotspot and cell tower data that is generated by tens of millions of iPhones sending the geo-tagged locations of nearby Wi-Fi hotspots and cell towers in an anonymous and encrypted form to Apple.
4. Is this crowd-sourced database stored on the iPhone?
The entire crowd-sourced database is too big to store on an iPhone, so we download an appropriate subset (cache) onto each iPhone. This cache is protected but not encrypted, and is backed up in iTunes whenever you back up your iPhone. The backup is encrypted or not, depending on the user settings in iTunes. The location data that researchers are seeing on the iPhone is not the past or present location of the iPhone, but rather the locations of Wi-Fi hotspots and cell towers surrounding the iPhone's location, which can be more than one hundred miles away from the iPhone. We plan to cease backing up this cache in a software update coming soon (see Software Update section below).
5. Can Apple locate me based on my geo-tagged Wi-Fi hotspot and cell tower data?
No. This data is sent to Apple in an anonymous and encrypted form. Apple cannot identify the source of this data.

reduces the size of the crowd-sourced Wi-Fi hotspot and cell tower database cached on the iPhone,
ceases backing up this cache, and
deletes this cache entirely when Location Services is turned off.
In the next major iOS software release the cache will also be encrypted on the iPhone.

It wasn't the main thrust of its "Qamp;A on Location Data" this morning, but Apple did also make a bit of news while it tried to ease those privacy concerns about how it's handling your data. The company says it "is now collecting anonymous traffic data to build a crowd-sourced traffic database," and that it's hoping to provide iPhone users with an "improved traffic service in the next couple of years." It didn't divulge much more than that, unfortunately, but that little detail lines up with some other navigation-related developments out of the company as of late. It acquired web mapping firm Poly9 last July (in addition to Google Maps rival Placebase in late 2009), and just last month a couple of job postings revealed that it was looking for folks to "radically improve" the iOS Maps experience. Add all those together and it's starting to look an awful lot like a shift away from Google Maps in favor of an all-Apple solution -- much like how the company relied on Skyhook until it could roll its own WiFi geolocation service.

The BlackBerry PlayBook may be noticably lacking a calendar app of its own (at least for now), but it looks like RIM could soon have more scheduling options than ever -- it's just acquired fellow Canadian company Tungle, which specializes in syncing your calendar across platforms. At the moment, that's done with either the company's web application, or its iOS or BlackBerry app (an Android version has also been promised), which also let you share your calendar with folks inside or outside your company and, of course, tie it into your various social networks -- so you can learn about the person you're having a meeting with, for instance. As you might expect, however, RIM is staying mum on exactly what it has in mind for the company, and it also isn't divulging any specific terms of the acquisition. Sure, you still may not be able to easily find an iPad 2 here in the US, but you can now sleep soundly knowing that the Japanese pen pal you had in elementary school could be rocking one by the end of the week. Amidst all the hub-bub about location tracking and pasty iPhones, Apple let slip that the WiFi iPad 2 will be available in Japan on April 28th, just as promised, coming to Hong Kong, India, Israel, Korea, Macau, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, South Africa, Turkey, and the United Arab Emirates a day later, then hitting China on May 6th. Local pricing is not confirmed, but suggested retail pricing matches US MSRPs ($499 for 16GB, $599 for 32GB, $699 for 64GB). 3G models are said to match US pricing as well ($629, $729, and $829), but Apple isn't confirming when they'll be available abroad, so at least you still have something over Katsumi.

What's big, mostly white, and set for a Korean launch tomorrow? That's right, the LG Optimus Big! This 4.3-inch whopper, LG's largest handset to date, touts a 1GHz dual-core processor, a slightly skinned Android 2.2 as its OS, HDMI output, a 5 megapixel camera, and 16GB of bult-in storage. That spec sheet sounds mighty close to the elder Optimus 2X that launched earlier in the year, though a couple of items have also been borrowed from the still unreleased Optimus Black. They are the NOVA display, which can crank all the way up to 700 nits of brightness, and WiFi Direct, which allows for wireless inter-device communication without the need for an intermediary WiFi access point. This big, delicious spec sandwich is hitting its home market on April 28th, but there's sadly no word on when and where else it might show up. Just keep an eye out for it, shouldn't be that hard to spot.
